An “Incidental“ Message

An “Incidental“ Message
(Ideology versus China Passion)

Meeting you is an incidental chance during the period, the first time
You are visiting this country, a land with freedom and liberty.
I couldn’t help thinking of the homeland we are sharing - -
A land, being different from the past, now vigorously revitalized

是來自五千年的文明,我們共有的文化與傳統;

What bring us together and closer at the first instant we meet are
The five-thousand-year-old civilization, the culture and traditions, we inherited;
However, what else does cause the reality? There are still conflicting ideologies,
The mental barriers between you and me, which remain from the Cold War days!

Those cannot be resolved are the ideology confrontations for nearly a century.
But the warm feelings of being a fellow Chinese are vividly showing on your faces.
Being thousands miles away from our native land, we all feel the same homesickness That is making the similar ripples in our hearts.

Listen! I am singing, but the words of Xu’s poem “Incidentally” have been altered:

“You and I meet on this America Continent.
You have your way and I have mine - - the direction of guiding mind.
You better remember, and be sure not to forget
The shining light exchanged from our hearts
When we come across each other tonight!”

In an instant, it lightens up the homeland we share in our hearts!
It seems that we have naturally found our common direction of guiding mind.

I am again sunk in contemplation, singing low:

On the American Continent tonight at this moment, with evening lights,
China being thousands miles away, I think of my homeland . . . . .
What is now shining on the vast land is just
The tomorrow’s Chinese morning sun(1)!

。。。。。

………

Then, at this moment, may I ask you - -
My dear China-on-my-mind! What else do you have in mind?

My dear China-on-my-mind! What else do you have in mind ?

Let me ask you again:
(Qīn'ài de , Wo xīnlǐ de zhōnghuá! Nǐ xīnlǐ yòu zài diànjì xiē shénme ne ?)

William Y. Shaw ((星熒) 邵維廉)) wrote in Chinese the initial version of this poem on December 19, 2011. I completed the poem on December 21, 2011 in La Jolla, California, USA. This is its literal translation by the author on December 28, 2011. (See note below and the Note of my other poem, “The Chinese Youth ….”).

(1)Due to the time-zone difference, the early evening on America Continent is just the time of the American dated “tomorrow,” when the morning sun starts to shine on Chinese land.

Note: One evening, we’re entertaining a group of visiting scholars from major Chinese universities at our home in California. In an incidental conversation, I verbally altered a few words of the well-known poem, “偶然Chance (or incidentally)” by the late poet Xu Zhimo (徐志摩). I altered the words just to express the mood of all people presenting at that moment. This “incidental” event trigged me to write this poem in Chinese several days later, and followed up by translating it into English.
